Let’s answer some Frequently Asked Questions
As part of our aim to be open and transparent, we provide the following answers to frequently asked questions.
What can I expect when seeing My Psychologist?
You can expect to be treated with respect. We take time to listen to you so we can understand your situation from your perspective. We will discuss psychological interventions (ie therapy) that are evidenced based and appropriate for your presentation. We do not prescribe medication.
How long is a consultation and how soon can I have an appointment?
Consultations with My Psychologist usually last between 50- 60 minutes and an appointment can usually be booked within a month. My Psychologist does have the ability to see clients at short notice.
How many consultations will I need?
This is certainly another one of the frequently asked questions. As you know, each individual and their mental health situation is different. Sometimes it takes one or two sessions for people to achieve a different perspective and move forward in their lives. When people have long term enduring mental health difficulties, more psychological consultations will be required. The timing of psychological consultations is negotiated with each client. At the start you may want to attend more frequently.
Fees
Fees are currently set at $311 per standard consultation.
NDIS clients are charged $244.22 for an hour of service.
Psychological Assessments and Reports costs vary due to individual requirements. Our Psychologist fee for a psycho-educational assessment is $2000. My Psychologist currently provides single practitioner Autism assessment and report for $2000.
It is best to call My Psychologist and discuss your needs.
Please refer to My Psychologist Fees and Appointments page for more details on fees.
Payments
My Psychologist will accept cash or EFT on the day of psychological consultation. Please call My Psychologist for more information about fees. My Psychologist can claim rebates from Medicare on your behalf. You will need to claim your rebate with your private health fund insurer. A non-attendance fee can be charged for non-arrival without 24 hours notice.
Do I have to be referred by a doctor?
Generally you do not need a referral to see a psychologist but please talk with your doctor about your mental health difficulties as you may be eligible for referral under a mental health care plan so you can access 10 psychological consultations with My Psychologist. With a mental health care plan you would receive a Medicare rebate (currently $96.65).
A doctor’s referral is required for work injury and motor vehicle accident claims.
You do not need a referral from a doctor if you want to claim through your private health insurance or if you personally pay the fee for a psychological consultation or assessment. Please be aware that private health insurance rebates will not cover the whole fee and there will be a gap payment.
What if I have been injured at work or in a motor vehicle accident?
Psychological consultation fees are normally covered by the personal injury insurer on approved claims. You will need to provide My Psychologist with the claim number and a referral from your doctor. My Psychologist will work with others involved such as medical practitioner, employer and insurer so you can concentrate on improving your mental health and wellbeing.
